Magnolias are evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs valued for their large and showy flowers which start to appear in April. Most are native to North America, but the colored flower varieties are mostly native to China. Magnolias were originally found in moist soils of valleys and the understories of hardwood forests, but are now widely planted throughout North America as ornamentals.
